In May, it's the must event, Le Festival de Cannes
It is certainly the event that has contributed the most to the reputation of Cannes throughout the world: once again this year the Cannes Film Festival will bring all the spotlight on the planet to the city, from 8 to 19 May.
In 1938, in opposition to the Venice Film Festival, was born the idea of a film festival where art would not be influenced by political maneuvering. In June 1939, its first edition was announced for the following September, from the 1st to the 20th, in the Municipal Casino hall and under the honorary presidency of Louis Lumière, the father of the cinematograph. All film producing countries are invited even though only nine of them say they are ready to participate. On August 23, the German-Soviet pact annihilates the dream of a little Hollywood along the pearl of the azure, the war breaks out and it is necessary to wait until 1946 so that finally the first edition of this extraordinary festival takes shape.
From then on, all the biggest names in international cinema will follow in Cannes, from Walt Disney to Jean Renoir and, more recently, Steven Spielberg, Ingmar Bergman, Ken Loach and Wong Kar-Wai. The stars are parading on the Croisette: Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Catherine Deneuve, Sophia Loren or Monica Bellucci for women and Orson Welles, Clint Eastwood, Gerard Depardieu or Federico Fellini for men for example. Impossible to quote them all ... This year, we already know that Cate Blanchett will preside the jury that will see more than 80 films before awarding Palme d'Or, Grand Prix, Staging Award, Interpretation Award, Screenplay Award and Jury Prize.
So, next May, expect a city center that is totally upset by the event, a huge crowd and a perceptible excitement on every street corner. Journalists confirmed or in the making, starlets, young directors looking for producers and international celebrities come to scroll through thousands of tourists looking for an autograph or, more relevant today, an unforgettable selfie ...
And note that in recent years, the Festival opens more widely to the public. Many projections are available, some even free. And for the pleasure of the eyes, do not miss, in parallel of the Festival, "Cannes makes the wall", an exhibition of photos installed between the buildings or on the monuments of the city.
The Cannes Film Festival is an exceptional experience that you must certainly taste at least once in your life. Come and discuss it with us, at the Cannes Riviera Hotel & Spa, we have a collection of anecdotes to tell you ... See you soon!
